Unified Police on Wednesday night were warning Herriman residents to be on alert after a man allegedly tried to abduct a teenage girl walking home from school.
Police said the 13-year-old was walking northbound about 3 p.m. near 5600 West and 13700 South when she encountered a man walking on a trail in the area. Police said the man approached the girl, grabbed her by the arm, pulled her and told her she had to go with him.
The girl kicked the man in the leg and ran southbound on 5600 West as the…

Finding a tutoring professional does not mean that you will find someone who will simply hand over the answers to your child. What it does mean is that you find a professional with a background in the subject you require, and that person then uses his or her expertise to help your child find the answers on her own. Tutoring can be a great boost if your child is struggling in a certain subject or has a problem to overcome, such as test anxiety.

When you begin your search, you should make sure you are very specific about your child’s grade level and the subject she requires assistance with. Tutors often assist in a broad range of subjects and grade levels, so you need to narrow down the field. After all, a 4th grade student who needs help with arithmetic is very different from a high school senior that needs help with trigonometry.

Think of what your ultimate goal is with your tutoring sessions. Are you looking for help in preparing for a specific exam? If so, there are probably tutors, schools and online prep courses designed specifically for the test you are looking at no matter what that test is. On the other hand, you may be trying to improve your understanding of a specific subject in order to build a solid base or catch up with your classmates.

Another thing to keep in mind when talking with tutors is how you best learn. Are you the type who can soak up and retain information in long study sessions, or do you do better with intense and quick lessons? Try to find a tutor who can offer shorter more frequent lessons if that helps you retain knowledge better. It does little good to slog through an hour of tutoring if you only remember the first ten to fifteen minutes.

Of course location can become a huge concern when looking for any kind of service. In tutoring for academics, it is often possible to find an instructor who can come to your house or meet with you at the library or a local college. Besides face-to-face tutoring, many students are turning to online tutors. The convenience of logging onto their computer at home is fantastic. Also, you are more likely to find a tutor who can meet very late or at other odd hours if the meeting place is online.

Utah Lawmakers will refine bill giving school funding to students

A bill to give education funding to students — instead of schools — was kept in committee Wednesday morning to give lawmakers more time to work on it, possibly turning it into a smaller, test program rather than making a statewide change.
HB123, in its current form, would require the state to put most of the money it now sends to high schools into education savings accounts for students in grades 9-12. Bill sponsor Rep. John Dougall, R-American Fork, said that could equal about $6,400 per stude…

Eastern Utah’s tar sands are just a year or so from producing their first commercial quantities of oil — if environmental appeals are settled and the company planning to mine can attract investors.
Those are big ifs.
Two oil shale mining companies contend they’re right behind and said Wednesday at the Governor’s Energy Development Summit that the state is poised for “the next big play” in energy.
All of them — U.S. Oil Sands, Enefit American Oil and Red Leaf Resources — rejected naysayers’ cl…

A state senator says Utah’s water districts have discouraged conservation by using property taxes to keep water rates artificially low and now he wants to put a stop to the subsidies.
“We don’t have a pricing mechanism for water and our utilization does not reflect the cost of the product,” said Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem. “It’s actually hidden in the property taxes that we all pay.”
Valentine is sponsoring SB78, which would require several water conservancy districts in urban counties to phase…

Like most parents you want what’s best for your kids. They spend a lot of time in school, and you know the tutoring services are available to give them additional support that isn’t necessary? If you’re like most families you stay quite busy enough with sports scouts, church and school then throwing the occasional birthday party and family outing, how could you possibly afford something else?

If your children are needing extra help with school, you may be able to get tutoring at no cost. School ministers have a certain amount of money in their discretionary budget that remains after paying salaries bills and the other basics that they are able to use in programs as they choose. School budgets are tight but tutoring has proven to be effective in helping students who needed the most, and the federal government provides funding through the no Child left behind program to some schools.

Facilities that offer afterschool care, such as boys clubs, girls clubs and the YMCA may also be great resources for tutoring. Often it is included in the standard afterschool program, although it will typically be more oriented towards homework help than teaching. If we tutoring is made aware of the areas where the child is struggling, they may be able to make time to do some more instructional work with them. This kind of tutoring will not be able to teach a brand-new subject but can make a significant difference in how well the child doesn’t school. It also saves parents a tremendous amount of hassle with trying to get homework done before bedtime.

Private tutors can be hired to do one-on-one teaching or small group tutoring, which is often available at a somewhat lower cost for each student. A private tutor will provide instruction in the subjects. The student is currently learning or if preferred, the tutor can teach additional subjects. One particular advantage that the private tutor has is that they can spend as long as necessary to ensure that the basics are fully understood, and can go back and review as needed, rather than sticking to a particular schedule. Kids don’t like to call attention to things they don’t understand in class, and sometimes they don’t know how to say what it is that is confusing to them. Individual tutoring allows those difficult areas to be picked up and resolved.

Tutoring is a great way to provide additional support for struggling students. It is also available to help students who are doing well but would like to make it just to the next higher level. Tutoring may be all that is required to bring a B student up to the level of making As, or it can teach subjects that are not even being taught in school. If that is desired to satisfy prerequisites for a different program or simply to keep the student interested in learning. If the cost of tutoring seems prohibitive, to be sure and speak to your child’s teacher or the administration at their school to find out what additional resources may be available to you.

Mobile marketing is one of the latest innovations that are serving to help small businesses get their advertising out there without having to spend an outrageous amount of money. One form of mobile marketing is in sending offers directly to your customers. This is very simply accomplished by texting, and although there may come a time when people ignore texts like TV commercials, for now, recipients are very open to reading their texts.

Buy one get one free is a great mobile offer. This works especially well with office workers who frequently eat in the same neighborhood and are easily able to take turns buying lunch. To get started, you may even give gift certificates which have a higher perceived value, but in reality, many people will not redeem the certificate so you have actually given a valuable gift and earned customer goodwill with no cost to yourself.

Most people don’t’ like to do things by themselves. When someone is at work and wants to go out to lunch, there is a good chance they will ask a coworker to join them. This may result in several calls down the hall being made and a small group going out together. Friday night at 5:00 is a common time for a group to go out right after work. If you reach one of them with an interesting offer, you may get the whole group coming to your establishment.

The downside to mobile marketing is that you have to have contact info for each individual that you wish to reach. The upside is that it isn’t hard to get it. One way is to set up at trade shows, craft fairs, etc and hold a prize drawing for people who give you their name and phone number. When people are out and about, looking for something interesting, they often do enter drawings. They are willing to give up their contact info for a chance to win that prize.

Marketing by sending texts is possibly the easiest new way to reach your market. You don’t need to hire any highly trained professionals, though you may want to enlist a specialist to manage your list, write your messages and send them out in order to keep your focus on your product and not on your marketing. It won’t be long until you have a successful marketing plan.

You don’t have to spend hours on the Web looking for information about local small business advertising in taylorsville.
